CGC Update – A 12 Month Review

It’s been both a successful and exciting year for Exeter based sustainability consultants, Carbon Green Consulting (CGC).

Here, James Blackburn, Director, tells us about the services provided and gives an insight into the projects the company has been involved in over the last year.

What exactly does CGC do?

As sustainability consultants we work on national construction projects.

Our role is to work with clients on sustainability, environmental and energy issues to ensure regulations are adhered to.

Who are your typical clients?

Developers, contractors, planners and architects – we work with individuals, small companies, major developers and government organisations on both commercial and residential properties.

What services do you provide?

We offer support and advice on energy and sustainability issues for planning applications.

This includes energy efficiency, consumption, data analysis and accuracy of sustainability credentials.

We also offer the comprehensive suite of compliance services in line with Building Regulations Parts L and G.

What kind of projects have CGC been involved with over the past 12 months?

We’re delighted to have played a major part in significant projects, including:

The redevelopment of Bordon Town Centre together with 2500 new homes, schools, community and leisure infrastructure.  We originally designed the green vision and for the past four years have been implementing these measures on behalf of Taylor Wimpey and other partners.

A site south of Tunbridge Wells for 750 new homes now in its final stages.

A 20,000 sq. ft office and retail development in Whitechapel High Street where we’ve carried out sustainability work with regard to the London Plan.

A development of more than 150 units with 40 affordable homes in Woking.

Have there been any changes to CGC’s accreditations during this time or has the company won any awards?

We’re now qualified Home Quality Mark assessors – the successor to the Code for Sustainable Homes which was disbanded by the government.

We also have BREEAM AP accreditation, meaning we can provide BREEAM assessment duties and add extra value to developers.

And we’re the proud winners of BUILD’s construction engineering award for the South West, recognising our achievements during 2017.

With regard to the state of the sustainability agenda, what has the last year meant to CGC?

The sustainability agenda has changed massively over the last couple of years, particularly between 2013 and 2015 when the government removed many standards and policies which we, as sustainability consultants, adhered to for our clients..

However, we’re finding that our services are increasingly required owing to the requirements of new initiatives such as the London Plan and we’re confident that this will ripple out into other local authorities.

We realise that the real impact of Brexit is yet to be determined, but the technical expertise and competence of our fully qualified and experienced consultants means that we’re ready and ideally placed to rise to these challenges and continue to deliver compliance based sustainability solutions to our clients.
