Unwanted Development could plague Councils

Councils who have no adopted local plans after the 1st April 2013 will be at risk of the planning inspectorate giving little weight to emerging strategies, thus exposing councils to a “presumption in favour of sustainable development” under the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

Ultimately, this will mean that the answer to any proposed development would be a “yes” unless the local plan specifically protects the site from development.

Councils are well aware of the situation and are defending their position as best they can but as Malcolm Sharp of the Planning Officers Society stated, a year’s transition period was not long enough to complete the local plan process.
