Permitted Development for Solid wall insulation to boost Green Deal

Yesterday, The Green Deal was boosted by a government decision to relax planning rules for solid wall insulation. This has ensured that the solid wall market will be more of a focus for the Green Deal acknowledged by the Energy Minister, Greg Barker who said that “From the go we will have a transformation in the solid wall installation number”.

Due to current planning legislation which precludes home owners fitting external solid wall insulation as it is unlawful to extend a building past the principle front elevation without planning permission, it was feared that plans for the uptake of this type of measure under the Green Deal would be a non starter.

DCLG has now confirmed that such a measure will now be deemed an improvement to the property, not, as previously deemed, an extension. There will still be requirements for planning permission on some buildings under listed status.
