With the pressure on development to achieve sustainability targets becoming more stringent, the impact of sustainability on any development is now a critical issue requiring early attention in the planning and design process (arguably RIBA Stage A or B). With project viability a major component in sustainability planning, more developers such as Hallam Land Management  are recognising the need.

Changes to the Building Regulations, in particular Part L, with Zero Carbon Homes targeted for 2016, throws up a number of challenges which need to be confronted at masterplanning stage if the project is to succeed on a number of levels.
