First Neighbourhood plan goes to the vote
Eden in Cumbria is the first locality to run a referendum under the current government’s neighbourhood planning policy which offers local people the ability to influence development in their local area. The referendum on the draft neighbourhood plan is set to permit more development on farms and conversions of homes which should increase the numbers of affordable homes. The referendum is due to take place on the 7th March this year.
Nick Boles, who recently visited the area, was keen to highlight the importance of the event and emphasied that “The area is one of the first to use neighbourhood planning to address local challenges and show other areas how they can do the same”.
The government has stated that there are nearly 400 areas which have applied to initiate neighbourhood plans and up to 20 plans are ready for consultation.
